Mobile Aircraft Firefighting Trainer (MAFT)

In November the Salina Airport Authority Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting (ARFF) unit conducted training for its staff as well as structural units from Salina, Great Bend and Hays Fire Departments.

Appearing much like an aircraft fuselage, the Mobile Aircraft Firefighting Trainer (MAFT) provides an opportunity for Airport Rescue Fire Fighters to "train as they'll fight" on their own turf and with their own equipment. The operation of the MAFT is coordinated by the University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute.

The trainer can simulate engine fires, flammable liquid spills, a fully engulfed interior cabin, and wheel brake fires realistically and safely, as the trainers have complete control over the flames during exercises.

"The FAA requires mandatory live fire training once a year," Salina Airport Authority's Manager of Operations David Sorell said. "Firefighters have to experience a real fire with real flames."
Training with the MAFT allows ARFF personnel to train with their equipment and standard operating procedures. By training at home, ARFF personnel can train with off-airport mutual aid fire departments and together learn the procedures and techniques needed to save lives when an aircraft accident/incident occurs. The firefighting will occur with specialized ARFF trucks as well as hoses and trucks used in structural fires.

The unit is designed and constructed to meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisory Circular 150/5220-17, Design Standards for an Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Training Facility. The Fire Fighter training is conducted as outlined in FAA Advisory Circular 150/5210-17, Federal Aviation Regulation Part 139.319 and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1003, Standard for Airport Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications.

Kansas State University's Polytechnic campus receives nation's first approval for unmanned commercial flight training

SALINA - Kansas State University's  polytechnic campus  has set a new precedent in the  unmanned aircraft systems  industry, becoming the first entity in the United States to receive approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to provide UAS commercial flight training to both students and outside companies.

The authorization, which is referred to as a Section 333 exemption, allows Kansas State Polytechnic to create and conduct an extensive flight training program for unmanned aircraft operations. Previously, motion picture and television filming and aerial data collection have been given permission for commercial UAS operations; however, the approval has been limited to only training internally and in these two mission-specific areas alone. Kansas State Polytechnic's authorization is open to students both internal and external and is not restricted to any one particular application.
