Catarino Porras

The Salina Airport Authority is pleased to welcome Catarino Porras as the fall 2015 airport management intern.

In his final year of the Airport Management Program at K-State Salina, Porras is applying his academic knowledge to the real world in the day-to-day operations at the Salina Regional Airport and Airport Industrial Center.   "This program is the first of its kind in the United States, opening up new opportunities for students and the Salina Airport Authority is proud to be a partner with the University by providing the internship piece to enhance the student's learning and marketability following graduation." said Tim Rogers, A.A.E, executive director for the Salina Airport Authority.

Explaining why he chose K-State Salina, Porras said "K-State has been a nice surprise for me because I receive one-on-one interaction and don't feel like a number in the system."

Porras, originally from New Mexico, served as a supply sergeant in the U.S. Army prior to coming to Salina.  Being from a small rural city in southeast NM helped make adjusting to Salina a bit easier.

Porras stated "While the military helped shape who I am today, with discipline and leadership, it was the bonds I made and still have with my fellow Soldiers that I will always remember the most, especially the bonds of those I made while serving overseas".

Porras is looking forward to carrying out his internship program duties and said "Upon graduating in May and completing my time at the Salina Regional Airport, I'm confident I'll have the skill set that will allow me to make an immediate contribution at my first airport position post graduation.  The opportunity to learn directly from experienced industry professionals employed at an airport, will give me a competitive edge in the job market."  While Porras' senior year has started out with a flurry of work and studies, he is looking forward to savoring his last year of college life and plans on attending several K-State football games and tailgating with friends and family for a little down time.  Go Cats!

The Salina Airport Authority is proud to have Catarino on staff and he will make a great addition to our team.

KSU Salina to become K-State Polytechnic - College of Technology & Aviation

School officials plan to change the name of K-State Salina. The school, which this year celebrated its 50th anniversary in Salina, will change its name from K-State Salina to K-State Polytechnic, College of Technology and Aviation.  Only the campus name will change and the college will remain part of Kansas State University as the College of Technology and Aviation.

K-State President Kirk Schulz made the announcement via social media Wednesday afternoon. Schulz tweeted "We have initiated the process with the KS Regents to change the name from K-State Salina to K-State Polytechnic - more details to follow!"

According to the school, a name change requires approval by the Kansas Board of Regents and possibly legislative action.
