Kansas National Guard Air Support Squadron Active at SLN and Smoky Hill Weapons Range

The 284th Air Support Operations (ASOS) has moved into temporary offices in the Great Plains Joint Regional Training Center headquarters at the Salina Airport Industrial Center. The unit plans to move into a new building at the Smoky Hill Weapons Range later this year.

The new $9 million ASOS headquarters on the range is under construction and should be finished this summer. The 284th ASOS will be the site for the Air National Guard's Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle training.

  • Salina Airport Authority Board Summary
  • At the January 2009 Board of Directors meeting, Gunner Wiles, Manager of Operations presented Dave Nease, Lead for Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) and Alan Mason, ARFF with their certificates of completion for the State of Kansas fire service training. Dave and Alan earned their certificates by taking a 40-hour class and passing a multi-dimension test. The certificates that Dave and Alan earned give them the designation of Fire Service Instructor One.
