Ft. Riley Garrison
Commander Col. William Clark and Deputy Garrison Commander Linda Hoeffner
examine a regional airspace map during a tour of the airport and airport
industrial center, January 20.
Col. Clark and Ms.
Hoeffner got a look at just some of the training and basing facilities
available in Salina and got a picture of what opportunities are offered
in the area.
The
Salina Airport Authority has a long history of support for the
military. Located in close proximity to the Smoky Hill Air National
Guard Weapons Range, makes the Salina Airport an ideal training
location.

Tower Updates
|

|
- We
have had a mild winter with mostly good flying weather this
season. Traffic is starting to pick up after the holidays.
- We
expect to see more helicopter traffic operating between the parallel
runways. This is another reason to avoid having fixed wing
aircraft in this area. West departures can expect to fly
runway heading for at least a mile when there is activity between
the runways or on runway 18/36.
- The
tower is fully staffed with six controllers for the first time in
several months. All controllers are fully certified.
- Pilots
who would like to come to the tower for a visit please call Monday
through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to arrange a
tour. We would be happy to show you around the tower.

A Burt Rutan-designed aircraft that spent 15 years
hanging upside down in Mojave, Calif., is spending some time in Salina.
The one-of-a-kind Model 81, also known as the Rutan
Catbird, landed in Salina on Friday afternoon, piloted by former Salinan
Jim Reed, who went to work at Scaled Composites after being part of the
GlobalFlyer mission as a student at Kansas State University at Salina.

From the XD's
desk: The Impact of Special Events at Salina Airport
|
The New Year is off to a busy
start with three significant events scheduled for the Salina Airport.
The organizations coming for each event are taking advantage of the
excellent airport facilities, central location and community
hospitality.
From February 28 through March
23 Canadian Forces will return to Salina and use the Salina Airport and
the Smoky Hill Weapons Range for forward air controller training.
More than 85 Canadian soldiers and airmen will deploy to Salina.
Kansas State University Salina
and the Salina Airport Authority will host the National Intercollegiate
Flying Association's 2012 SAFECON competition from May 14 through May
19. More than 300 students from 30 colleges across the country will
compete to earn a national championship for their school in addition to
individual pilot honors.
For over 70 days the National
Center for Atmospheric Research, NASA and the German Aerospace Center
will deploy to the Salina Airport for an important scientific mission.
From May 1 to June 30 over 130 scientists, technicians and pilots will
operate three research aircraft out of the Salina Airport to collect
samples and data for the Deep Convection Clouds and Chemistry
Experiment.
These three events spanning
four months will bring over 500 people to Salina for long term stays in
our community. The combination of increased aviation fuel sales, hotel
rooms and apartments rented and local purchases will add to an already
thriving local economy. Most of all, Salina will benefit from the
exchange of ideas and knowledge that our visitors will bring. The drive
for excellence in training, education and scientific research will
leave a lasting impression on Salina and Saline County for years to
come.

ARFF Station construction on pace
|

Construction of the Salina Airport Authority's new
10,000-square-foot, $2.5 million aircraft rescue and firefighting
station is running right on schedule as we end the first month of the
year.
"Thanks to great efforts by Randy Dean (of
Miller-Stauch Construction, Inc.) as the project superintendent we've
been able to keep a good work pattern between all the subcontractors to
keep this project on time and budget," said Kenny Bieker, Salina
Airport Authority manager of facilities and construction.
The precaste concrete panels are 100 percent
complete. The next step will be roof decking and laying the
interior concrete floor.
The project is on track to be completed in June.

Lift

The desire to fly is
an idea handed down to us by our ancestors who, in their grueling
travels across trackless lands in prehistoric times, looked enviously
on the birds soaring freely through space at full speed, above all
obstacles, on the infinite highway of air.
~
Orville Wright
There is no sport
equal to that which aviators enjoy being carried through the air on
great white wings.
~Wilbur Wright
