Employee Spotlight
|

|
|

|
People have a lot of things to say about their
boss. So when Executive
Director Tim Rogers, A.A.E. was nominated as this month's Employee
Spotlight I figured, "Why not open the forum?"
I chose not to interview Tim for two reasons. The first being that many people
already know a lot about him and the second being he would have told
me no anyway.
With the majority of the staff in or past their
second decade of employment at the Salina Airport Authority, I
decided to find out what the handful of people who know Tim as a boss
had to say about him.

Manager of Public Affairs & Communications
What follows is a collection of anonymous quotes
from airport staff.
Tim never passes up the chance to be the first
to wish you a "good morning" every morning.
He takes his position as executive director very
seriously. Every decision he
makes is for the benefit of the airport and the community.
Tim takes care of his people. I know he has for me in times of
need, like dealing with my wife's cancer. It meant a lot to me and my wife
that I had the time to be with her.
So smart.
He's always thinking ahead.
He's always three or four steps ahead of you.
A great boss will challenge you like none other.
He gives you the opportunity to take ownership
in every project.
Tim has been a great boss. He has done a tremendous job
building the Industrial Center while improving the Airport
itself.
He has done a lot for me in the past 25
years. It is nice to know he
trusts and believes in my ability.
The boss is all heart.
He really takes care of us especially in the way
of medical insurance and benefits and programs like that. He's always made sure we feel good
about what we are getting from our job.
Twenty-some years ago when I was going through a
divorce, I came to work angry and upset and he said, "Grab the
keys to the snow plow."
So we went out on the snow plow and talked for about an hour
or so. He probably doesn't
even remember it now, but that was really something.
I never want to disappoint him and not out of
fear or anything. I just know
he goes above and beyond for us and the airport so I want to too.

Tower
Updates
|

|
Controller Scott Vredevoogd is resigning his position
effective Aug. 5. He is moving
back home to Michigan and hopes to go back to work for Midwest ATC at
Battle Creek Federal Contract Tower.
He will also be taking some college courses. We wish him good luck, he will be
missed.
The replacement controller for Scott will be Joseph
Cantrell. He comes to Salina
Tower from 7 years in the army.
His last duty station was Fort Rucker, Alabama. Joseph has visited Salina and was
very impressed with the tower, airport, and city. His reporting date should be the
second or third week in August.
The new taxi phraseology procedures are going well. We are occasionally saying
"taxi to" but are catching ourselves and correcting our
transmissions.
We enjoyed seeing the B-24, B-17, and P-51 and hope they
can return next year.
The FAA continues to see a continuation of airport
surface errors. Pilots please remember to stop at all hold lines
unless you have a clearance to proceed.

From the
XD's desk: Wings Over Salina Air Museum
|
This summer will mark the start of the design
of a new building to house the Wings Over Salina Air Museum. The
museum's mission is to celebrate Salina's rich civil and military
history. A new, modern museum building will provide the venue to
tell the story of our community's contributions to aviation history
and look ahead to future potential of military and civil
contributions to our local economy.
During the month of August, the Salina Airport Authority
will be selecting a consulting firm who will be given the job of
developing the initial building design for the new museum building.
A number of highly qualified firms have submitted statements of
qualifications and interest. The upcoming interview process will
result in the selection of an architectural and engineering design
team that will provide the blueprint for the construction of
significant new structure in our community. To be located adjacent
to the Salina Airport's 12,300 foot primary runway, visitors to the
new museum building will be able to enjoy learning about our
aviation history while observing current airport operations.
Today, museum supporters can begin to assist with
the development of the Wings Over Salina Museum. Museum staff is already
accepting donations of Salina related aviation memorabilia. Items
such as log books, photos, uniforms and film footage will help to
build museum exhibits.
Monetary donations are also needed to support museum
construction and operations. Cash donations can be made through the
Greater Salina Community Foundation, Wings Over Salina Air Museum
endowment fund.
The Wings Over Salina Air Museum is now more than
just an idea. Soon, area residents and visitors will be able to
enjoy a new museum building.
Tim Rogers, A.A.E.

SAA lowers mill levy, approves agreements
|
With both mid-year fuel sales and lease
operating revenues climbing, the outlook for the Salina Airport
Authority is generally positive as reflected by the July 21 Board
Meeting.
The Authority's board of directors approved a
resolution lowering the mill levy from 4.315 to 4.055 mills for
2011.
A lower mill levy coupled with temporary note
financing will provide the Authority sufficient funds for capital
improvements. During the
coming year, the Authority will seek long-term financing for
priority projects including airfield improvements, a new fire
station and improvements to existing buildings and hangars. Once completed, the renovated
buildings and hangars will provide opportunities for job growth.

grants for airport and taxiway improvements, July 28.

Kansas Department of Transportation to fund the partial rehabilitation
of the north 4,800 feet of Taxiways Alpha, Foxtrot and Hotel. The grant will fund half of the

bond issue.
The sole bidder for this project, APAC- Kansas
Shears Division, submitted a bid of $738,775 allowing Manager of
Facilities Kenny Bieker to expand the project by including much
needed taxiway shoulder stabilization, said Executive Director Tim
Rogers, A.A.E.

Wings of Freedom brings past to SLN
|
|
It had been 65 years since
Alfred Murphy had been inside a B-17, but it wasn't long after the
WWII-era heavy bomber was airborne Monday that the 85-year-old had
crawled his way through the tight passage under the pilots to the
nose turret.
"I wasn't
sure I could do it either," Murphy said once the plane was on the ground.
"I'm still in pretty good health, cancer a
couple of times, and a stroke, but I just didn't feel old right
then," Murphy said.
Murphy, of Wichita, along with fellow B-17
veterans Bob Kopke, of Great Bend, and Dale Grothusen, of
Ellsworth, were on the first flight of the Wings of Freedom tour's
stop in Salina.

July Lift: The Copilot
|
I am the copilot. I sit on the right.
It's up to me to be quick and bright;
I never talk back for I have regrets,
But I have to remember what the Captain forgets.
I make out the Flight Plan and study the
weather,
Pull up the gear, stand by to feather;
Make out the mail forms and do the reporting,
And fly the old crate while the Captain is courting.
I take the readings, adjust the power,
Put on the heaters when we're in a shower;
Tell him where we are on the darkest night,
And do all the bookwork without any light.
I call for my Captain and buy him cokes;
I always laugh at his corny jokes,
And once in awhile when his landings are rusty
I always come through with, "By gosh it's gusty!"
All in all I'm a general stooge,
As I sit on the right of the man I call "Scrooge";
I guess you think that is past understanding,
But maybe some day he will give me a landing.
