KSLN Runway 35 ILS Commissioned
Salina, Kan.
December 20, 2004
The Federal Aviation Administration commissioned a
new Category I instrument landing system (ILS) for
the 12,300 foot Runway 35 at the Salina Municipal
Airport today. The new ILS was installed as a part
of the FAA's national ILS sustainment program. The
new ILS replaces a decades-old system.
The new dual transmitter ILS was fully funded by the
FAA's Airway Facilities Division, NAS Implementation
Branch, at a cost in excess of $550,000.
The ILS sustainment project was completed prior to
the arrival of the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer. KSLN
was selected as the launch site for pilot Steve
Fossett's solo, nonstop around the world record
attempt in the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer scheduled
for early next year.
Salina Airport Authority executive director, Tim
Rogers, said "the new ILS will provide excellent
service to airport users for years to come. The
FAA's Central Region project team did an outstanding
job in making possible this very important airport
improvement."
Known as "America's Fuel Stop", the Salina Municipal
Airport is a familiar cross-country refueling location
for more than 7,000 jets each year. Salina FBO's
deliver more than 4.4 million gallons of fuel annually.
