Salina, Kan., (November 20, 2009) - The Hawgsmoke
Scholarship Committee awarded three scholarships to area students,
Monday at the Salina Airport Authority's M.J. Kennedy Air Terminal
Building.
Baker University nursing student, Jenny Baxa and K-State
at Salina professional pilot student, Michael Warren were each awarded
$500. K-State at Salina professional pilot student, Travis
Altenhofen was awarded $400 to aid them in their academic careers.
The Salina community was so eager and generous with their
contributions to help host the biennial A-10 bombing competition that
there was a surplus in donations.
The 442nd Fighter Wing and 303rd Fighter Squadron from
Whiteman Air Force Base dedicated the $1400 in left over contributions
to a scholarship for students whose parents are or were serving in the
military or students in an aviation program.
"It was an extremely gratifying process to assist Lt
Col. Borgen and Maj. Bradfield during the planning of Hawgsmoke,"
said committee member Jo Ann McClure. "I hope we have an
opportunity to bring the event back to
Salina."
