K-State Flight
team headed to national competition

(October 25, 2011) - Kansas State University's Flight Team is headed to
the National Intercollegiate Flight Association's SAFECON competition
in May 2012 after taking a close second at the Region VI competition,
Oct. 17-21, hosted by University of Nebraska - Omaha.
In the closest
competition in Region VI history, K-State was only one point behind the
overall first place team, University of Nebraska - Omaha. K-State's
Flight Team placed first overall in flying events and third overall in
ground events. They also won the Safety Award, which is given to one
team that demonstrates safety in all aspects of the competition.
SAFECON
competitions feature flight events and ground events that test the
teams' abilities in all aspects of flight. Contestants placing in the
top 20 in each event earn points for their team. The results of each
event contribute to the teams' overall scores.
The team
earned 30 top 20 finishes with 20 of them in the top 10.
Team members
ranked second in Top Pilot and fourth, 10th, and 18th in both Top
Scoring Contestant and Top Scoring Male Contestant.
Individual
victories included first, seventh, ninth, and 17th placements in
Short-field Landing and third, fourth, eighth, and 16th in Power-off
Landing. In the Aircraft Preflight Inspection event, team members
placed fourth, fifth, and ninth and in Aircraft Recognition there were
first, fifth, 16th, and 17th place rankings. The Ground Trainer event
had Wildcats in the second and seventh places; third and ninth place in
Simulated Comprehensive Aircraft Navigation; and third, 15th and 17th
in Manual Flight Computer Accuracy.
Teams of two
K-State participants fourth, ninth, 14th, 15th, and 18th places in
Message Drop and fifth, eighth, and 15th in Navigation.
Region VI
includes teams from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas.
NIFA's 2012
National SAFECON will be hosted by K-State Salina.
