Airfield construction on track despite storm
Salina, Kan., (August 12, 2009) - Although
winds at the Salina Airport Authority reached hurricane strength
Monday, airfield construction is still on track.

The storm left in its wake three totaled P-hangars, several overturned
tractor trailers, displaced construction barriers and a dozen or so
Great Lakes Airline passengers waiting in the terminal lobby. In
a lucky break the P-hangars were clear of aircraft.
"The storm set us back about a day," said Kenny Bieker,
manager of facilities. "We got one lane of asphalt down
Saturday and Sunday. We should have gotten two more down.
If we get decent weather we'll make up for it though. I think
we're still set to open August 19."
Construction crews are working to make up the lost time. More
asphalt will be placed on the main runway and then painters have to do
the centerline strips, aiming points, threshold and the numbers.
