SAA board approves grants

Salina, Kan., (July 28, 2010) -  The Salina Airport Authority board of directors met in a short special board meeting to discuss two grants for airport and taxiway improvements, July 28.

The board accepted a $475,000 grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation to fund the partial rehabilitation of the north 4,800 feet of Taxiways Alpha, Foxtrot and Hotel.  The grant will fund half of the $950,000 project and the Authority's portion will come from a 2010 bond issue.

The sole bidder for this project, APAC- Kansas Shears Division, submitted a bid of $738,775 allowing Manager of Facilities Kenny Bieker to expand the project by including much needed taxiway shoulder stabilization, said Executive Director Tim Rogers, A.A.E.

The work is expected to be completed by mid-September.

The board also accepted a $226,890 Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Grant to pay for 65 percent of the cost to design a new aircraft rescue and firefighting station.

The Authority will pay the remaining 35 percent, $122,172, of the contract with BWR Corporation from a 2010 bond issue.
