Canadian airman shaves
head for Air Museum
Salina, Kan., (July
07, 2010) - Avionics technician, Cpl. Craig "Cam" Munsie had a lot of hair when he
arrived in Salina from Canada in mid June. He and the Canadian airmen from the
409 Tactical Fighter Squadron may be home in cool Canada now but Munsie
left behind his hair in hot Kansas to benefit the Wings Over Salina Air
Museum.
"For the first
couple of days we were here it was getting up into the triple digits
and in case you haven't noticed, I have a Brillo pad on top of my
head," he explained.
"So I was really, really hot."
Munsie and his fellow
airmen were sitting at their hotel and the subject of his hair came
up. His counterparts must have
wanted it gone as bad as he did because soon there was $30 on the table
in front of him if he'd let them shave it off.
"Next thing I
know there's bucket!"
After looking into
some major charities and nonprofit groups, he decided the Wings Over
Salina Air Museum was where he wanted the money raised from leaving him
bald to go.
"It ties in to
even what we're doing here," he explained. "This was an Air Force Base at
one time and the National Guard is here even today. It revives the history of what was in
the community, gives something to the veterans who have served here and
brings awareness to the people who still are."
The mop on his head
met its demise during the squadron's celebration of Canada Day at the
Country Inn and Suites.
By the end of the
evening, a rubber band holding more than $200 was presented to Manager
of Public Affairs and Communications Melissa McCoy on behalf of the
airmen of Canadian 409 Tactical Fighter Squadron and Cpl. Munsie's
"Brillo pad."
