Salina Community Leader Collects Schilling Air Force Base History

SALINA, Kans., (March 27, 2008) - Almost 51 years to the day, the Salina Airport Authority unveiled a display commemorating the March 16, 1957 Schilling Air Force base dedication ceremony. The historical display can be viewed at the M.J. Kennedy Air Terminal. Larry Britegam, President of Sunflower Bank in Salina, made the display possible because of a donation of historical memorabelia.

Britegam spends what little spare time he has perusing the Internet for historical items pertaining to the former Schilling Air Force Base. One of his finds was a commemorative program from the Schilling Air Force Base dedication ceremony on March 16, 1957.

The historical items that have been located and obtained by Britegam have been donated to the Salina Airport Authority. Soon many more of Britegam's finds will be on display in a museum dedicated to the aviation history of Salina. The museum will become an important component of the hotel/restaurant complex that is planned for the SLN Aviation Service Center.
