Great Lakes Initiates Salina Service to Denver in Addition to Kansas City
Great Lakes Aviation, Ltd. airline service returns to Salina, Kan. beginning March 30, 2008, with two new daily flights to Denver in addition to two flights to Kansas City now flown by Air Midwest, Inc.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded the 2008-2010 Salina and Manhattan Essential Air Service contract to Great Lakes after vacating the contract previously held by Air Midwest.
Commercial air service at the Salina Municipal Airport will be continuous as service transitions from Air Midwest to Great Lakes. Great Lakes previously served the Salina community from April 1998 through October 2001.
"Great Lakes is excited to extend our reliable service to the residents of the Salina area once again," said Chuck Howell, Chief Executive Officer for Great Lakes. "We feel our partnerships with United Airlines and Frontier Airlines will greatly benefit the community and increase usage of the Salina Municipal Airport."
Salina leaders have been working with Great Lakes for more than a year to develop airline route alternatives in order to grow airline service options for the community. New scheduled service to Denver gives area travelers access to a number of additional destinations served by the Denver hub.
"During my time in Congress, I have recognized the importance in maintaining commercial air serve in communities across Kansas," said Congressman Jerry Moran. "The work of community leaders has paid off in the news that Great Lakes will begin servicing the Salina area. Maintaining air service in Salina is essential to the success of the business and medical communities, as well as in providing travel options for local and area residents."
"I would like to extend a thank you to the Salina Airport Authority, City of Salina and Saline County for their efforts and cooperation in working with the Chamber on this project," said Dennis Lauver, President of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce. "I am impressed with Great Lakes' long-term vision in meeting our air service needs."
"We are pleased to have Great Lakes return to the Salina Municipal Airport and the Salina community because of its solid long-term business plan and on-going interest in service to our community," said Timothy F. Rogers, A.A.E., Executive Director of the Salina Airport Authority. "Great Lakes' long-term interest in Salina enables us to discuss future service to other hubs."
"I am pleased Great Lakes will provide air service to Salina benefitting personal and business travelers in the surrounding area. I am a long time supporter of the EAS program which provides critical air service to Kansas' small community airports. Air Service in rural areas is not simply a luxury, it is imperitive." - Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS)
