Elizabeth Nelson

Elizabeth Nelson, Shawnee, Kan., joined the Salina Airport Authority in August as their Administrative Assistant. She plans to graduate from Kansas State University Polytechnic Campus in May with a Bachelors degree in Airport Management and a minor in Aviation Safety.

During her time at Kansas State Polytechnic, Elizabeth has earned her private pilot's license, served as the Programming Board Chair for the Student Governing Association and as Secretary for Kappa Sigma Alpha, and is the President/Co-Founder of the Kansas State Polytechnic AAAE Student Chapter.

She has always had a passion for aviation; some of her first memories of aviation date back to her childhood years when she would sit and watch planes take-off and land with her grandfather. Going to the airport and traveling has always been one of her favorite pastimes and she is thrilled to finally dedicate her time and effort to the Salina Regional Airport. She thoroughly looks forward to interacting with everyone throughout her experience with the Salina Airport Authority as their Administrative Assistant.

Family values, work ethic help Bieker thrive at Salina Airport Authority

Kenny Bieker has rebuilt his share of homes and been involved in building and designing many miles of streets, highways, curbs, gutters and runways since graduating from Hays High School in 1978.

All of the above prepared him to oversee construction, maintenance and airfield work at Salina Regional Airport and Industrial Center.

It can be a stressful job, he admitted. But pulling strength from growing up as the seventh of nine children of a Hays family, the soft-spoken Bieker handles daily duties without many headaches.

"You have to control worry, take it in stride. You could worry yourself to death on so many things that can happen," he said. "But if you think you're going to have a relaxing day, believe me, you're not."

Bieker is responsible for about 1.3 million square feet of Airport Industrial Center buildings, more than 100 tenants, and "millions of square feet of pavement" in four runways - one of them more than 2 miles long - airport apron and parking lots.

Partners Kansas State University Salina and Westar Energy build one of the largest enclosed flight facilities for UAS in the nation

Kansas State University Salina and industry partner Westar Energy are advancing unmanned aircraft systems, or UAS, education, training and research with the creation of a new flight facility.

The UAS Pavilion, constructed on K-State Salina's campus, is one of the largest enclosed unmanned flight facilities in the nation. Measuring 300-feet-long by 200-feet-wide and 50-feet-tall, the structure will enable staff and students in K-State Salina's  unmanned aircraft systems program  to conduct flight training and research within steps of their lab space. Also, the structure connects outside industries to an arena for company training and research.

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the pavilion has been planned in conjunction with Westar Energy at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, on the K-State Salina campus. Both the media and the public are invited to attend.
